Compression fractures are typical in the lower and middle back (lumbar and thoracic spine) during an auto accident. During the car crash, the upper body is thrown forward while the lower body is intact/kept in place by a seatbelt. The movement can damage the vertebrae and may result in spinal fractures that lead to spinal cord injuries, as the broken vertebrae may dislocate.

Spinal Fracture Symptoms

  • Moderate to severe back pain that worsens with movement,
  • Patients with spinal cord injuries may also experience
    • loss of bladder and bowel control,
    • numbness,
    • tingling sensation, or
    • weakness

Do not move an injured driver or passenger if you suspect he or she is experiencing spinal fracture but instead call 911 or emergency assistance because any movement could cause further damage to the bone. A backboard and neck collar are necessary before transporting a car accident patient to an outpatient hospital.
